Morning Light

This past weekend during a blissful break from routine, we were walking to breakfast when everyone else got a few steps ahead of me and I caught this moment, this snapshot of my daughter walking, bathed in the sparkle of morning light.

I am enraptured by morning light, how it makes the ordinary glisten and breathes life into a day. How it reminds me that He makes all things new and if we blew it yesterday, well, today is a new day.  A brand new chance.  A fresh start.

His mercies are new every morning.  Do you ever let that truth sink fully into your heart?

Joy comes in the morning.  Joy that may not make sense in light of our circumstances or the state of this broken world.  Joy unspeakable.  Joy unexplainable. Defiant joy.

It's a new day!  Let His love flood your life like the morning light floods your home.  Let it invade, cast out the darkness, reflect His glory.

Morning has broken, like the first morning.
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning,
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.

Don't Let The Lights Go Down

Have you ever had a moment when God was so sweet to speak to you clearly about something just when you needed to hear His voice on the matter?

That happened to me this morning.

I've been doing a new Bible study and when I opened it up, the first passage it brought me to was Matthew 5:14-16.

You are the light of the world.  A city that is
set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in Heaven.

It was a word from God that I needed to hear, and He knew it.  I sat there in awe of how well my Savior knows me.  How intimately acquainted He is with the details of my life and the issues of my heart.

You see, my heart longs to shine for Jesus

But I have realized something along the way.

Darkness always wants to extinguish light.

And this world has more than its share of darkness.

And there will always be something or someone who doesn't want us to shine our light.

But our Creator, the Lover of our soul, the Redeemer of our life wants us to shine brightly for His glory!!  He doesn't want us to hide our light.  He wants us to be a city on a hill, a light that points others to the Light that can change their life!

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

John 1:4

...Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.

Exodus 34:29

You see, when you've experienced a glimpse of God's glory, it cannot help but radiate!  So don't give in to the darkness that threatens to overtake you.  Don't give up when the darkness feels big and you feel small.  Shine on.  In the midst of darkness, shine as brightly as you can!  You are going to have to be brave.  You are going to have to find your courage.  But when you do, Christ will cut through the darkness and shine through you!

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:5

God blessed my heart this morning through His Word.  And He blessed my heart last week when I heard this song for the first time.

Don’t let the lights go down
Don’t let the fire burn out
Cause somewhere, somebody
Needs a reason to believe.

Why don’t you rise up now?
Don’t be afraid to stand out
That’s how the lost get found.

Britt Nicole

Don't let the lights go down!

I know it's a dark world out there.

Let's find our courage.

Hold out our candles.

And let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

A Snapshot From The Blurry Years

I have been thinking about an old photo from a season I affectionately call The Blurry Years, and found it the other night.  I've been in an old photo sort of mood, probably because Madi recently turned eight and birthdays make me nostalgic.

Why do I refer to this season as The Blurry Years?  In April of 2005, I had an unexpected C-section at 36 weeks pregnant because of a very serious condition called HELLP Syndrome.  We had a rough start, this beautiful baby Madi and I, and just when we were getting the hang of things I found out I was having another baby.  I remember we waited until her first birthday to share the news. It was Easter time and I sang 5 nights in a Passion Play, praying each time I got up for my song that I wouldn't throw up because my morning all day sickness was so bad.  I remember being so sick the day of her Little Einstein 1st birthday party.  Six and half months later our handsome Trevor entered the world, and this time the C-section was routine.  But he had severe (let me re-emphasize severe) acid reflux and I was sick a lot his first year, with symptoms randomly mimicking those of malaria according to several doctors (wish I was joking).  We made it through his season of crying and projectile vomit and my season of spiking 104 degree fevers, flu-like symptoms, and other health issues. Then two days before his first birthday, we made a major move from familiar Maryland to our new life in Florida, which would prove to be a defining and refining time in our lives.

We were building a home so we lived in a lovely rental house for the first ten months of our time in Florida; however, this house was completely out of the way from everyone and everything we were involved with.  I spent most days by myself with the kids, surrounded by boxes since we didn't want to fully unpack, knowing we would soon be moving again.  In the rental we conquered potty training which meant we were down to only one child in diapers, and moved Madi from the crib to the big girl bed.  We swam in the beautiful pool, baked and decorated cookies, made our first Disney visits, played in a new playhouse on the back porch that Santa delivered, snuggled up with paci's and favorite books and videos.  It was a sweet time with my two precious babies - but when I try to remember it, things are blurry around the edges.  It's hard for me to recall details of that season.  God was teaching me to thrive amidst the changes and challenges and my new role as mother of two, but there were days when I was just plain trying to survive.

The reason I share The Blurry Years with you?

Because I know from the feedback I get that many who read this small blog are moms of little ones.  Many of you are living your own blurry years. You are women in the season of nursing and diapers and tantrums and first steps and baby giggles and reading the same books over and over and new adventures and major life changes. You are learning to embrace the God-given role of mothering, a role that will both tear your heart wide open and make you bubble over with laughter like no other.

Now back to the photo...

I love this photo for so many reasons.

*the penguin Christmas socks our friend Jeannie gave me that date this photo as taken in December, 2006, the month of our worst Christmas ever

*that it was taken in our first home, a sunny little townhouse where we laid the foundation for our marriage and family

*the paper decorated with stickers on the table, and the one lone sticker stuck to the table

*the I'm a Big Sister book on the ground I had been reading with the new big sister in our house

*Madi's comfy Nick and Nora lamb pj's my mom bought for her, and how that girl would have stayed in her pj's all day if I had let her (and some days did)

*that Madi is holding Ellie, who was a very important pink elephant in our home

*the random roll of toilet paper strewn across our carpet

*the fact that when I turned my back to tend to baby Trevor, Madi tried to help herself to a bowl of Cheerios

*the fact that not one Cheerio made it into the bowl, but the remainder of the whole box made it onto Trevor's baby blanket

*that even though my blurry world was spinning, before I cleaned up the mess I stopped to take a photo, so I know I was still me even though it's hard to remember

*that we made it

And so will you, dear mom.

Survive, but let God gently teach you how to thrive.

Hang on, but let go and enjoy.

Take a deep breath, but take time to exhale.

And grab the camera, because one day it's going to help you remember.

Psalm 16

If you have a moment or two today, stop ~ take a deep breath ~ and read Psalm 16. We have been going through the Psalms on Sunday evenings at church and it has been such a comforting study.  This morning one of the passages I came across was the 16th Psalm. I have often shared verse 11 with you...

You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Oh, how I love that scripture!  I have experienced the fullness of joy in God's presence and it just overflows, there is simply nothing like it!

This morning I was caught by verses 8-9...

I have set the Lord always before me;
Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;
My flesh will also rest in hope.

This world is crazy and seems to be spinning out of control.  Life can be downright complicated and people can be downright difficult.  However...with the Lord before us, we don't have to be shaken or moved or brought down!  We can be glad ~ we can rejoice ~ we can rest in hope!

What a beautiful thought for this Wednesday!

Man, I Feel Like A Woman {And Starfish}

There is this new Ariel ride at Disney, and a few months ago in the midst of an incredibly busy season, a couple girlfriends and I rode it during a preview day while our kids were in school.

When we entered the room where the sea creatures dance under the sea, there were all these colorful starfish with super happy, smiling faces on the walls. And these starfish, they would just spin round and round and round and round, never stopping, just spinning.  I sort of laughed to myself and made the comment to my friend that these days I feel like those starfish, spinning and spinning from one thing to another. She looked at them and said, "Hey, at least you're still smiling!"

But really, it's the rhythm of womanhood, this constant spinning from role to role, and honestly it can be exhausting but sometimes it's just plain amazing and you have to laugh when you think of all a day can hold for a woman.

Last night I chuckled as I reflected on my day, a day not nearly as busy as some, a day that wasn't as packed minute to minute as tomorrow promises to be, yet still my
roles constantly changed throughout it.  I have a feeling it will look familiar to most of you...

It started as usual, getting up in the dark, packing lunches, making breakfast, making sure backpacks were packed and kids were dressed and sent off to school with a kiss and a prayer.

I've been working quite a bit but the plan was to have a day at home, so I settled in for coffee and time with God, then hit the trail with two friends for exercise and conversation.  We walked four miles and talked nonstop as women do and need to do. We were almost back where we started when my phone rang.  It was the school asking if I could be there in an hour to work a half day.

There went my plans to catch up on housework, pick up groceries, and wash the gray right out of my hair!  We quickly finished our workout and I drove home with just enough time to jump in the shower, eat an early lunch while simultaneously putting on makeup and getting dressed, and get to school to teach second grade.

When the bell rang and school was over, I gave snacks to my two little loves then sent Madi to art club and took Trev to the library where we worked on his homework and reading.  At 4:15 we headed home where I made another snack and spent most of the next two hours working with Madi on classroom homework, vocabulary homework, and reading.  By the time we finished Jimmy was home from work and I was rushing to get the kids out the door with my parents so he and I could head out for an overdue dinner date, just the two of us.

But there was a student in our youth group who had a basketball game and Jimmy wanted to go out to support him, so first we headed off to the high school gymnasium and cheered him on and after they won the game we headed to Carrabba's for adult conversation over hot minestrone soup, fresh Caprese salad, and a shared steak.

However, since I ended up working and we had no milk, orange juice, cereal, etc., we had to stop at the store on the way home and ended our date night standing in the world's slowest checkout line.  (This is real life romance here!)  Since we hadn't ordered dessert, I picked up some frozen yogurt and was looking forward to enjoying some later, that is if didn't melt already while waiting in that crazy line.

It was late when we finally got home, and I got to work putting away the groceries and folding a gigantic pile of laundry that left me with about 10 missing socks.  Seriously. And if my day hadn't been reflective enough of a day in the life of a woman, I ended the night by accidentally singlehandedly eating that entire pint of frozen yogurt straight from the carton. Oops.

This stuff of being a woman.

It's a multi-faceted, often complicated journey.

It is no wonder we sometimes talk out loud to ourselves!

But we're in this thing together, girls.

And here's a reminder as we face the rest of this day, and the next and the next and all each one holds for us...in God's strength, we can do this.

When the spinning becomes dizzying, He is the equilibrium that steadies us.

So spin on, smiling starfish, spin on!

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Philippians 4:13

Why Am I Discouraged?

This afternoon, I read this devotional and was compelled by its truth.  The familiar scripture at the end grabbed my attention.

Psalm 43:5, "Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!" (NLT)

Something may have you down and discouraged.  Something may have your heart divided or sad.

But God is your Savior!  You can hope in Him!  You can choose to praise Him again!

Just thought someone else would be blessed by this reminder as well!

Love and Good Cheer {He Has Overcome!},

Why I Bought A Mug With A Question Mark On It

It was a month or so ago when I was heading towards the frozen foods aisle at Target and got sidetracked by this...

A simple mug with a question mark on it.

It perked my interest, but I left it on the shelf.

Then it caught my eye on the next visit...and the next one...

And then one visit I noticed the peculiar mug had been marked half off and was on sale for $2.50, so I bought it and use it often for my morning coffee.

Why would I want to buy such a mug?

Now, that's a good question!

(So sorry, I just couldn't resist. Haha.)

In all seriousness, it is because I can identify with that little mug.  There have been times where I have felt as if my life has been marked by a big, huge question mark.

And it's been a journey.  Because on the one hand, carrying unanswered questions can be incredibly trying and feel like weakness or lack of faith, but on the other hand it is marked by perseverance and seems evident of authentic faith.  Still believing when you can't see all the answers right in front of you, but trusting that they are there.

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1

I have quite a few unanswered questions right now.  Actually, I have a few more today than I did yesterday.  Some are small and relatively minor; others are big and quite significant.  I am learning that God can handle my questions.  In fact, Jesus asked a question that has burned through my soul as I've thought about this subject.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Matthew 27:46

He was suffering in our place on the cross.  He was in submission to the perfect plan and will of God the father.  We know he had asked God to take the cup of suffering from him, but had uttered those beautiful words of submission and surrender...not my will but Thine be done.

Ultimately, love overcame!  Death was defeated and victorious resurrection triumphed! Yet as Jesus hung on the cross in obedience to God as the sacrifice for our sins, literally giving his life and taking the punishment for those sins upon himself, he cried out to God with an agonizing question.  The Bible records the question.  It also records the sweat that became drops of blood.  The weeping in the garden.

So I am learning to cry out honestly to God with my questions.  With my stress.  With my tears. And when nothing in life or this world seems to make sense,God's overcoming power and presence are just as sure as the morning sun.  I may not know all that will happen, but I know He is there.  He listens to my questions. And He loves me through them.

Sometimes He answers them quickly, and sometimes I wait and lean on His understanding.

The secret things belong to the Lord our God...

Deuternomy 29:29a

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6

It's interesting how information stays in your brain.  How you can go years, even decades, without thinking of something and then one day it is right there.

As I type this, a song from my childhood in the 80's comes to mind.  I haven't heard it in ages.  Some of you may remember it.

When answers aren't enough there is Jesus
He is more than just an answer to your prayer
And your heart will find a safe and peaceful refuge
When answers aren't enough, He is there.

In life, some seasons are going to be identified by a question mark.  On this journey, until we finally make it home, we're going to have questions.  And when we have questions, we are going to want answers.

But when answers await, or when answers aren't enough...

There is Jesus.

Rest in that tonight.

The Battle Of The Mind

It's a new week.

Is anyone else extra thankful for that today?

I am home today, which is a huge blessing. I love being home.  I have taco chili cooking in the crockpot and the scents of fall burning, which adds to the comfort of this place I love.  I spent some much needed extra time in the Word and prayer this morning.  The rest of the week is going to be extremely full.  Today I sit for a few moments.  I am thankful for so much.  I am thankful it is a new day.  I am thankful for mornings.  His mercies are new every morning!  I am thankful that it is a new week, because last week threatened to drain the life right out of me.

Ever had a week like that?

I am a solid Biblical counselor (by study, not profession) and give myself free counseling sessions on a regular basis.  This weekend a friend suggested that I start charging, which made me giggle! (On the one hand I could make some extra money...but on the other hand I can't afford myself. Haha!  The conundrum of being your own therapist.)  Last week my "office" was busy with three demanding clients - me, myself, and I.  And let me tell you, it was exhausting!

I'm not proud of this, but I had a few days where I was tempted to resign any roles of responsibility, leadership, and influence, and crawl into a corner where I could be anonymous, average, and apathetic.  That self-protective corner looms in front of me at times, luring me with lies that it would be easier to hide there.

However, God desires leaders to shine as lights and stand strong for Him.  So I press on in the name of Jesus.  But sometimes my flesh is weak, and I have to fight a battle of the mind.

I've been thinking about that battle a lot.  Often we automatically assign the term "battle of the mind" to issues of purity and lust, and those are absolutely areas where we must remain on guard.  But there are more issues than those in this battle.

Sometimes in life we get a little beat up; we get a little torn down; we have to process words thrown out about us that are unfair or untrue; we have to deal with circumstances that we just plain don't understand; we have to stand strong in a culture that mocks God and could easily weigh our hearts down, or tear our families and faith apart.

During these times it is easy for all that to get in our head.  And we replay words, and wonder why on earth someone would say or do that, or feel like we just can't take this anymore, or feel we don't have the strength to stand strong and endure.  And the enemy of our souls would take the greatest delight if we took our ball and went home.  If we found that corner and cowered in fear and self-protection, extinguishing the light that threatens his darkness.

But the Lover of our souls has the power to renew our minds.  He gives us a plan of action.  His Word, our source of life and strength, tells us where to set our thoughts.

"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things."

Philippians 4:8

Sometimes we want to meditate on the harsh realities of life that threaten to drain us to the point of ineffectiveness.  Our minds race with these thoughts, but we need to replace them with things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous and praiseworthy.  Things that will be honorable and profitable to our spiritual lives.

The battle of my mind was so intense this week that I literally made out a chart of some harsh realities that my mind was dwelling on (that threatened to drive me into that corner) versus a chart of some truths I know from God's Word that I needed to replace the other thoughts with.  It looked like this...

Leadership is lonely.  I had a dear, sweet pastor's wife recently tell me she was battling serious isolation and trust issues.  She didn't need to say more.  I get it completely.  I cannot describe to you how lonely it can be as a leader but if you are one, than you know this already. But in the loneliness I often ask myself, what am I going to do? Throw in the towel?  Be anonymous, average, and apathetic?  Or embrace the truth that God is always with us - He will never leave or forsake us - He is El Roi, the God who sees.  He knows - He will defend and have the final say.  We must saturate our minds in truth, because truth trumps feelings every time.

People are manipulative.  There's really not much more that is necessary to say, except that manipulation hurts and drains.  But God is truth - His Word is truth - and He knows the truth, the whole story!  The Bible says we can know the truth and the truth will set us free! (John 8:32)

Life is not fair - often the righteous suffer.  Oh, some of the suffering I have seen among the righteous lately has brought me to my knees on behalf of others and what they are going through.  It doesn't make sense to our earthly minds.  But God is just and all knowing - it will all be sorted out in eternity - and He calls us to faithfulness regardless of our circumstances.  That is a high and honorable but difficult calling.

We have some faraway friends who have been enduring an incredible trial for some time now.  This couple has four beautiful teenage/young adult children.  They opened their home and were sweet mentors to us and several other couples when we were newlyweds.  They are godly people grounded in the Word who have served Jesus faithfully.  And right now Tim is fighting a very serious battle with brain cancer.

They have been actively posting about their battle on facebook and a blog titled We Choose To Believe.  I am amazed how much they are relying on and claiming Scripture during this battle.  It is humbling and inspiring.

The other day Melinda posted this on her facebook page...

Gal. 6:9

"So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up."

Thank you for the encouragement of keeping on!

My God be glorified today!

Right smack dab in the middle of their intense physical, mental, and spiritual battle, she chose truth.  And shared truth.  And the truth she shared encouraged my weary heart to not give up.

So if your heart is weary today, may I encourage you to not give up.  If your mind is in the middle of a full fledged battle, may I encourage you to set your mind on those things Philippians 4:8 instructs.

Just this morning I was brought to this verse.

"and be renewed in the spirit of your mind"

Ephesians 4:25

Nine words that offer renewal when we think we're just about done.

Claim the truth of God's Word today.  It will renew the spirit of your mind!  It will help you keep going!  It will breathe life into your weary soul!  God's Word is the most powerful weapon we have in this battle.

Blessings for this new week and whatever it may hold,

Jennifer

Working On My Weaknesses, One Room At A Time

I have come to terms with the fact that I really, really, really have to work hard to keep my house organized.  Oh sure, I love a fresh, tidy living space and try to keep it that way. Yes, I put out seasonal touches and all things cozy to make our house a home. But keeping up with pantries, closets, cabinets, and other hidden spaces?  I fall short. And I am trying very hard to work on strengthening my weaknesses!

Before school started, the kids and I worked for two days straight cleaning out and organizing their bedrooms and the playroom.  We packed up bags and bags of things to give away, which made for a lot more space.  We rearranged what we had to give everything a fresh look, and got an organized uniform station ready for both of them so that early school mornings would go more smoothly.  So far this has been a great help! We went through every nook and cranny of both bedrooms and the playroom, and though it was a major undertaking, we all feel so much better now that it is done!  The kids are playing in these spaces more often and truly enjoying the extra room and tidiness.  I have no expectations of perfection - that can be suffocating in a home - but I do know we all thrive better without excess clutter and with extra room to move and functional spaces.

The next thing I wanted to tackle was my kitchen.  This was a long overdue project and to be perfectly honest, I was dreading it.  I knew I needed to basically take every single thing out of my cabinets and pantry and start over.  Everything needed scrubbing and rearranging.  I have a lot of cooking and baking supplies because I use them all the time - we are an eat at home family.  But my cabinet system wasn't working and it needed a total overhaul.  Today was my only open day of the week so I seized the moment and faced this project head on.  I put some good music on my Pandora (so energizing!) and worked all day long.  I took out everything, forcing myself not to stop halfway through when I thought I would never empty it all out.

Several hours later, once my family room was filled with dishes, bakeware, pantry items, and every kitchen gadget imaginable, I vacuumed out and scrubbed down each cabinet and the pantry.  Once they were clean, I put everything back in a totally new arrangement, and got rid of some items I didn't need to clear out some space.  I am excited about my new system, and think it is going to be much more functional!  I actually ended up putting most of my large and heavy bakeware items in my pantry, and designated two cabinets for food.  We will see how this arrangement works, but I think it is going to make more sense and be easier and less cumbersome to get to what I need when cooking and baking.

I didn't finish until evening, but am relieved that this project, which had been hanging over my head for some time now, is finally complete.  I am also so tired I can hardly type!  My plans of writing some helpful or thought-provoking blog, or maybe catching up on facebook albums I have been wanting to upload for months, are out the window.

Because I am going to bed!

More behind the scenes projects await - I'll let you know how they go when I get to them!  Hoping to deal with either my closet or the laundry room next...

Dream sweet!  Rest knowing God loves you, weaknesses and all!  I know I have to remind myself of that sometimes!  He loves with a love that sees past the messy closets, and even beyond the messy corners of my soul, into the heart of someone who is really trying. His love sees and knows.  It is patient with me.

I can rest in that kind of love.

There Is Hope

Let me just start by saying that my friend Laurie is on a roll with the best cards ever these days!  I don't know where she is finding them, but they are amazing!  Shortly after I received the perfect birthday card, I received this lovely card from her in the mail.  Laurie is one of my faithful prayer warriors, and has definitely been a keeper of some of the secrets of my heart, a safe place I have turned to knowing I will be prayed for, cared for, encouraged.  This little card was so uplifting.  Take a listen...

Life is hard sometimes - crazy, mixed-up, messed up. And there you are in the middle of it all, just doing your thing...being strong and brave and beautiful
like it's no big deal.

But let me tell you, girl, it is: Not everyone can do what you can do. Not everyone can handle things the way you can.  While you wonder sometimes if you're doing ok...the rest of us are just watching in wonder.

On the inside of the card was a verse I had actually posted on my facebook just recently...

Psalm 31:24  Be strong and let your heart take courage,
all you who hope in the Lord.

As my spirit was energized by the text and Bible verse on this gorgeous card, I immediately thought of 4 or 5 friends I would love to send this card to.  Women who need to know that yes, life is crazy and hard and complicated and even messed up at times, but they are making it happen day by day and doing just fine.  Women who need to know they can be strong, have a courageous heart, hope in the Lord.  Women who need to know I admire them for facing each morning with strength and courage when I know some of the challenges their days hold.

Then I thought of you all.  And I thought that there are probably a few women I don't even know who are reading this right this minute and need to be reminded that they can keep putting one foot in front of the other and make it through what may be a very difficult season of their life.  Women who need to be reminded that they are strong, brave, beautiful, and that in the Lord there is hope no matter what their circumstances may be.

So for the friends on my heart or the women I've never even met who need a word of encouragement today...

This card is for you.

Be strong.

Let your heart take courage.

Hope in the Lord.

Go do your thing.

We'll be watching in wonder.

The Power Of Praise

This morning I woke up at 6:30 am with the weight of the world on my shoulders.

Perhaps it was because I am still not feeling very well.  Oh sure, I've been pressing on doing everything from school programs to field day to beach time to field trips and everything in between.  But I have still been feeling poorly, fighting sinus issues that are wearing me out.  Have you ever noticed when you aren't feeling well physically, you are more vulnerable emotionally?  When my eyes opened and my throat still felt sore and my body weary, my mind also felt cluttered and my heart overwhelmed. Questions without answers surfaced.  To do lists loomed.  Stress tugged at the covers.

After getting everyone off to school, I spent some extra time in Bible study. Interestingly, one of the passages my David study took me to this morning was 2 Samuel 22:1-51, a long chapter where David praises God for His deliverance from the Philistines.  David's song of praise calls God his rock, his fortress, his deliver, He who is worthy to be praised, who saved him from his enemies, who was his support, who is his strength and power, who is the one and only God.

Reflecting on the passage, Beth talked about how we need to celebrate old victories once more and new victories for the first time.  How we need to remind ourselves of God's faithfulness.  She asked us to ponder how we could make celebration a more regular part of our relationship with Christ, a more regular occurence in our life.

I took some time to journal some victories both past and present, some battles the Lord has won in my life.  I thanked Him for those.

Then I turned up the praise music.  I had sheets to wash and laundry to fold and a sink full of dishes to attend to, but I did so to the soundtrack of praise.

The first song my Kari Jobe Pandora station cranked out was her song You Are Good.  Over and over, I heard these words...

Every day, I'll awaken my praise
And pour out a song from my heart
You are good, You are good, You are good
And Your mercy is forever.

Your kindness is forever
Your goodness is forever
Your mercy is forever, forever.

My mind settled down and became more focused.  My spirits were lifted.  The burden felt lighter.

My initial thoughts which overwhelmed were replaced with thoughts that overcame.

I continued my chores and my day with an intentional spirit of praise and celebration.

It's not that I listened to some worship songs and, zap, all my questions were answered, my body was healed, and my problems were solved.

No, it's not that at all.

What is true is that when I awakened my praise, my focus shifted from my hurts to His kindness.  From my stresses to His goodness.  From my failures to His mercy. From me to Him.

And that is the power of praise.

We're Gonna Make It (Reflections Of A Mom Around Mother's Day)

It's interesting how much I thought I knew about being a parent until I became one.

All the babysitting, teaching, working with young people, books read, and articles considered could not have prepared me for what it would take to care for and nurture a child.

The never ending journey it would be.

The way my heart would indeed walk outside of my body from that first cry on.

I would not realize the complexities...how I would strive to make them feel like one in a million and engrain in them what a special, unique creation of God they are, all the while trying to teach them the world does not revolve around them.  Not to mention the other thousands of intricate lessons that are part of the mosaic of character we are trying to help them piece together while they are under our wings.

I would not realize the extremes...how I would experience the greatest of joys and the deepest of frustrations, give out boundless energy and sometimes feel exhaustion all the way to my bones.

I would feel the delight of glowing teacher's reports and various accomplishments, but also remember the humiliation of dragging a tantrum throwing toddler out of the store (with a full cart of groceries and carrier bound infant in tow).

I would know love like I have never known, love that would actually draw me closer to God and help me understand Him better, but a love so deep that it would make me ache at times.  When you love someone to their core, when pieces of you take on lives of their own, your souls become intertwined.  You feel their hurts.  You pray like you never have before.

I love being a mom.  I love my children.  They are the greatest gifts God has ever entrusted to me, and the time I have spent investing into their early years has been worth more to me than any worldly possession or dream.  We have had some of the best times together.  Magical memories made.  Joy in simplicity.  Laughter that comes straight from the belly.

We have also had fussy days where I have gone ahead and cried right along with them.  Days where I felt like throwing in the towel.  Days where I was convinced I was a failure.

Grace has covered me.  It has filled in those gaps.

When I meet God in the mornings, I am more equipped for what the day may bring.  I still fall short, but His Word is there to help me rise up.  To teach them His precepts. To build their character.  To help shape their hearts.  To wrap them in love.  To draw boundaries that will protect them.

To not grow weary in doing good.

We spent the Saturday before Mother's Day at the beach as a family.  As I looked at some of our snapshots by sea, lyrics immediately came to mind.

If love is an ocean wide
We'll swim in the tears we cry
They'll see us through to the other side
We're gonna make it.

When love is a raging sea
You can hold on to me
We'll find our way tonight
Love is an ocean wide.

Moms, listen to me.

We're gonna make it.

If today is bad day, go ahead and have a good cry, say you're sorry, and move onward. If today is a good day, laugh with everything you have.  Enjoy the moment. No matter what today is, give your kids a hug and tell them how much you love them, how important they are to you, and how you wouldn't trade anything in the world for the gift of being their mom.  Those words are water to my children's souls.  I can see it in the way their eyes glow when I tell them.

And no matter what tomorrow holds, find a few moments to draw strength for your journey from God's Word.  We can't do this in our own strength.  But we can do anything He has called us to do in His.  Spend some time with a friend or two, friends who love you where you are and who nurture your faith and motherhood journey.  We don't want to try and do this alone.  We need each other. Don't give up.  We are in this thing together.

Leaving you with a quote my dad shared in his message Sunday morning...

There is no more influential or powerful role on earth than a mother’s. Stay at it, dear lady. Never doubt the value of your calling. Without your positive supportive partnership, the family could not survive.

One Clear Certainty

A couple weeks ago on a beautiful morning, I sat on my front stoop, letting the breeze off the lake blow through my hair as one of my most faithful friends and prayer warriors read this Scripture to me over the phone from miles away.

I Peter 1:3-9

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love.  Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith - the salvation of your souls.

Those words were like water to my thirsty soul.  Around the same time, a woman I have never met but has become a friend thanks to the blogging world sent me this verse...

Job 23:10 But He knows the way that I take; When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

More water to my soul.

Recently, this passage stood out to me and I sent this Scripture to another faraway friend who I knew needed to hear this as well.

Psalm 32:7-8, 10-11

You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.  (Selah)

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked; But he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him.  Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

When I shared the devotion at our last ladies event, I told the women that if there is one clear certainty from the past several years of my life, it is this - God's Word is so powerful, and it is vital that I spend time in it daily.  It is my sword, my lifeline, my source of hope and encouragement, the lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.  I encouraged them once again to take time to learn, study, and apply the Word of God to their lives.

One thing I love about our church is the fabulous children's workers God has blessed us with.  Our kids learn so much each Sunday and Wednesday, and I can't even begin to express how grateful I am for the discipleship they are receiving at such a young age.  This past Sunday, Trevor came home with this...

I love the simple instructions at the bottom of the page regarding God's Word.

Read it!  Do it!

Now that is some great advice for us all.

*Note - This morning looks like it should be a quiet one, and barring any unexpected interruptions, I am going to try to spend some time sharing with you some of the lessons I have been learning lately from God's Word that I have been meaning to write about.  Stay tuned!

Sometimes Love Isn't Glamorous

In fact, sometimes love stays up most of the night with a little boy who can't seem to stop coughing, no matter how hard he tries.

It attempts to fall asleep sitting up in the chair with him, bracing his back as another coughing fit steals rest and breath.

Sits criss-cross on the floor holding a bucket, wiping tears, glancing at the clock and realizing it is nearly three a.m., wondering if sleep will ever come and where to find the energy to throw a birthday party the next day.

It gives sips of water to the sick boy throughout the night.

Brews a cup of coffee when morning comes and gets to work with baggy eyes, dark circles, messy hair.

It tries not to get upset when someone spills a cup of sticky, melted frozen yogurt all over the kitchen floor just when things are coming together.

It helps clean the mess, as well as the powdered sugar that went flying everywhere out of the mixer.

Sometimes love is tired and weary, but works together as a team to give a special someone a special day.

It gets showered and cleaned up at the last minute.

Then greets and serves with a smile.

And knows it would do it all over again to see her smile.

Like spilled yogurt and powdered sugar, love can be messy.  It is sometimes middle of the night fevers and hurrying at the last second and all sorts of other unplanned imperfections.

But it is also beauty, found in the bright eyes of the birthday girl or the blessed silence of the little fellow who finally fell asleep.  Or in a kitchen full of friends and loved ones who don't seem to notice or mind the sticky floors at all.

Love bears all things.

Love is last night.

Love believes all things.

Love is this afternoon.

Love hopes all things.

Love is tomorrow.

Today Was A Good Day

I'm glad I can say that, because I admit I woke up feeling a cloud of discouragement threatening to loom.  Once the kids were off to school I got in the Word and in prayer and the cloud dissipated.  But it made me think about something that I believe I will share soon, because I think it is an issue many - if not all -  women share and deal with for the majority of their lives.  So look for that post in the near future!  You will know it when you read it.  And I hope it will connect us deeper at the heart and spur us on to continue well in all our many roles on this journey of life.

After my quiet time, I was off to the retirement home to teach the choir.  Their Easter concert will be here soon and I worked them very hard today! They did great, and are learning their songs so well.  It has been neat to work with the residents in this capacity and has taught me a lot.

After practice, Trevor and I had the unexpected treat to share a picnic lunch with some of the residents at a local lake and park!  We visited with them, and Trev caught up with a delightful silver haired lady he had bonded with at an Easter event last year.  She was tickled pink by his energy and conversation!  He played his little heart out at the playground and we left full and glad we went.

When we got home, Trev was treated to some time playing Indiana Jones on the Wii while I did some much needed housework and laundry.  I worked for quite some time, then we went to pick up Madi.

Once we were back home, the kids and I went outside with our scooters and bikes to burn some energy and enjoy the sunshine!  At first Madi and I were riding and Trev was scooting, but then he decided to practice some more on riding his bike without training wheels.  He had worked on this for a few minutes Monday evening, but not for too long.  Well, this afternoon that boy started riding fast and free!  A twelve year old neighborhood boy we had never met happened to ride over to play some basketball in the court and he was quite a friendly fellow.  Trev was doing great but on the verge of discouragement when the boy arrived and called out, "Hey man, you are doing awesome!"

Well, wouldn't you know Trev's eyes brightened and he sat up straighter and got a determined look on his face.  After that he rode like a champ.  All he needed was that affirmation from an older boy!   It was a great reminder of how far a timely word of encouragement can go.  He was riding and turning and even starting up by himself!

Now if we get just get him to use the brake instead of riding into the grass and jumping off like a wild man we will be in business.  Maybe tomorrow.

We were all hot and sweaty after our bike rides so I brought out some good ol' Flavor Ice popsicles!!  The kids and I sat on the porch chewing our ice and drinking the leftover juice out of the plastic tube, my favorite part when I was a kid and my neighbor's mom would bring out those icy treats to us in his backyard.  Sweet memories.

After cooling off with popsicles it was bathtime, then Trev went out with his Paw Paw to eat and spend time while Madi, Jimmy, and I were off to church to practice for the Easter play.  I fed Madi and we were out the door.  (I didn't eat my gourmet dinner of graham crackers and peanut butter and a brownie until I got back home later tonight. )

Rehearsal went well - Madi has a ton of lines in this play and it is a huge step for her.  I am proud of her for being willing to step out of her comfort zone to do this, and am praying hard that she will remember everything, not be too nervous, and enjoy it. I am going to be quite nervous for her, though I will try to hide it well!  I am thankful she is using her talents for Jesus at a young age, and hope and pray she always offers her all to Him.

Now we are home and the kids are long asleep and I am tired.  But today was a good day, and I wanted to thankfully reflect on that before my head hits the pillow and we start all over again tomorrow.

Rest well, friends.

I hope tomorrow is a good day.

Why Do I Blog?

That's a question I have been pondering for months now, and this is a post I've been writing in my head for a long time as well.

There are thousands upon thousands of blogs out there.  And each person behind each blog has their own reasons for writing.  For putting their thoughts into words and pictures and sending them out into a great big world that has plenty of words to read and pictures to view already.  For letting their voice be heard.  And for having the courage it requires and taking the effort and time to do so.

I am new to the blog world.  I was busy getting married, transitioning into the role of pastor's wife, working jobs, having babies, and making a major move when the blog scene became popular.  Honestly, I started blogging practically before I started reading blogs.  My mom had a list of blogs she enjoyed, and would sometimes show me ideas or articles when I was at her house.  She told me I could and should be doing this, that I had things to share.  It sounded interesting and intriguing.  (And of course, we all know we should listen to our Momma!)

I figured out how to create a blog and started dabbling with it late 2009.  I started actively blogging in 2010.  There are weeks and sometimes months where time is hard for me to find to sit down at the computer, but overall I have been fairly consistent the past two years.  I have not done advertising or such.  This is a little blog.  But the statistics show someone is reading.  In fact, lots of people are reading, and extremely surprising to me, people all over the world are reading!  And I keep writing.  And taking snapshots of life.  And writing some more.  But through the writing, I have mulled over the reasons why.  And here they are.  The reasons why I, an average wife and mom with a small little life, blog.

To be an encouragement to others.

By nature I am a glass half full, happy, uplifting type of person.  And I have also learned through the years from Scripture how we are commanded over and over to uplift and edify one another, and have tried to practice this.  But I started blogging during a season in my life where I was receiving mostly discouragement from many people in my life.  I clung to the little encouragement I received during that time like a life raft to  keep my head above water.  As I grew stronger and stronger in the Word of God during that time, it encouraged me beyond what I could have imagined and enabled me to press on.  And I realized something crucial...people need encouragement.  Many people are drowning in discouragement.  There is plenty of it out there.  But I wanted this little blog to be a place where people could come to be encouraged and lifted up, whether through Bibles verses and things God has been revealing to me in my study of His Word, or a funny story about my kids that brings a smile on a tough day, or by sharing out of my weakness that He is strong enough to carry us all through this broken world.  I often pray over blog posts that someone will be encouraged.  And it has been interesting through the years the feedback I have received, often via a private message in my facebook inbox or the like.  People who I had no idea were reading have taken the time to share how they have been encouraged on their journey through  this blog. And their sweet words have been an encouragement to me to keep writing and sharing.

A recent and very neat example is this.  In December I felt compelled to write this blog about our worst Christmas ever during "the blurry years" of my life.  A few days later I received a message from a sweet, young wife and mom I have actually known my whole life.  We are separated by distance and I haven't seen her in a few years.  Come to find out, her Christmas 2011 was remarkably similar to my Christmas 2006, only her oldest was 2 and her new baby was 9 days old.  Their family was hit with a horrific stomach flu and like me, she felt like she may not survive it trying to nurse and care for a newborn being so sick and helpless.  She wrote to me how she and her mom read my story while both laughing and crying.  She said it was a terrible Christmas, and she was feeling overwhelmed about how she is going to make it through her own blurry years, but she was encouraged by my post and was reminded that Christmas will come again next year and things will get better.  I responded to her message with more words of encouragement, and marveled how God works.  His timing is perfect.  To God be the glory.

Because I am a writer.

And writers write.  Whether it is songs or essays or critical analysis or journal entries or love letters or facebook statuses or books or blog posts, we write.  I have been writing since I was a young girl.  And I believe God imprinted on my heart in my late teenage years that I will one day write a book for His glory.  I feel Him pressing on my heart to do so often lately, and ask you readers to pray for me in that area.  For some reason that is an overwhelming thought, but when the timing is right I want to be willing to do what He wants me to do, and I need to trust that He will enable me to do so!  In the meantime, here I am...being faithful to write from the heart of a regular girl facing the chaos of this life and finding contentment in Christ along the way.  And I am enjoying the process!  Blogging is a wonderful creative and emotional outlet.

To be a light.

There is a lot of darkness in this world.  It is everywhere we turn.  And there is a lot of darkness on the internet.  But darkness isn't merely the opposite of light, it is the absence of light.  And I want to shine brightly as a light for Christ!  I want this blog to be a bright spot in someone's day.  To be a place to find light, hope, and joy in a dark, broken, and grim world.  There have been multiple times I have considering unplugging from it all, deleting my facebook and pulling my blog.  Stepping off the stage and hiding in a corner.  It often seems easier.  I admit sometimes that critical people have threatened to get the best of me and discouragement has nearly pushed me in that corner of fear and self-protection.  But then darkness would win as another light was extinguished.  My light would become absent.  And guess what?  I believe God has given us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!  I claim that victory and give Him thanks!  And I determine in my heart daily to not grow weary in doing good - as difficult as it can be not to give in to weariness - but to press on to the upward calling of Christ Jesus and to make His name famous, show how He changes lives, and proclaim the joy found in living for Him!

And my statistics show that "empty tomb," "the empty tomb," and "the empty tomb of Jesus" are three of the top searches that have brought people to my blog in its all time history.  I will press on.

To inspire.

People inspire me.  Photos inspire me.  Words well used inspire me.  I see something and it triggers in my mind something I could do.  Let's face it, life can be mundane.  And if we're honest, the responsibilities of being a wife and mom can be mundane and draining at times.  I have learned through the years that I thrive, not just survive, when I live an intentional, positive, active, creative life.  And while so many people out there live in states of discontentment, dissatisfaction, or depression (the statistics are sadly astounding) I hope that something they see here may inspire them.  Inspire them to find joy in the daily by making time for God's Word, or trying a new recipe, or rearranging something in their home for a fresh touch, or finding a great deal.  Inspire them to try something new.  To make something -  be it a loaf of bread, batch of muffins, a craft with their kids, or a simple DIY project - and experience the emotional and physical lift that come from doing so!  This is a blog about a girl on a super tight budget with limited resources and talent.  Nearly everything I share is simple, affordable, and "doable" for the average person.  But I have found the ultimate resource -  joy drawn from an abundant life in Christ - and want those who read this to draw inspiration from that and do something!  I hope and pray my readers leave wanting to show love in a new way, minister to someone in a new way, add a homemade touch of cheer to their home, make a great meal or treat for their family, or to face the day with increased energy and a fresh focus.

To be a role model.

After over a decade in student ministry, I am connected to a lot of teenagers and twenty-somethings on facebook.  My heart beats for those girls more than I could ever describe, and I find myself constantly thinking of ways to reach out to them, praying for them, and trying to bring them encouragement on their journey.  I have been very surprised to find out how many of them read this blog on a regular basis. It brings me joy that they stop by, because unfortunately the teens and twenties generation lives in a world of distorted images, false realities, and an image driven race to "success."  Many of them have been walked out on by someone, and hide major insecurities.  They feel fiercer competition for image and status than we ever felt thanks to social networking.  They have seen marriage become more about a wedding than a covenant, and have even seen celebrities they follow enter marriage as a joke or publicity stunt.  They are under a ton of social pressure and often feel confused by conflicting messages all around them.

But here, on this little blog, I want them to find truth, which is found in one place - God's Word.  I want them to know they are loved by God and can find contentment with Him, not the things of this world.  I want them to know that life is much, much, much more than status and image and other empty and meaningless vanities.  I want them to know marriage is not a joke or meaningless union, but a God-given blessing; that when vows are taking seriously and a couple makes Christ the foundation of their life, it can be absolutely amazing.  I want them to know that a good spiritual, marriage, and family life takes hard work, but brings joy far greater than the material things that seem so tantalizing or temporary pleasures that give a short but later empty high.  My husband and I try our utmost to model to the next generation something real, genuine, strong, and happy - and that is rooted in Christ alone.

Recently one of the precious girls in our youth group who we love to pieces and who reads this blog was sharing some of her boy problems with me.  After a long conversation, she smiled and sighed and said, "Well, hopefully one day I'll find my Mr. Jimmy."  Oh, sweet girl - you will!  Just hold out for him.  Wait for a guy who loves and honors God first, cherishes and respects you, believes in honoring vows and keeping commitments, and seeks to live like Jesus - then you will find your Mr. Jimmy.

To remember.

I guess this is where this blog is more for me and our family than anyone else.  Life goes fast.  Days race by and turn into years.  I try to be present in each day, making the most of the moments God gives us.  But it can be easy to forget what was happening and how we felt and what God was teaching us during all the seasons of our life.  I want to remember those things.  And I want to remember the funny things my kids said, or how our house looked at Christmas, or what activities I did with my kids, or even how to make that baked oatmeal or those marinated strawberries I loved.  I want to remember  how my heart felt during the ups and downs of our  life.  This blog is a journal of sorts, a capture of life as we knew it.

I write with discretion though, relying on the Holy Spirit for help.  I believe there is a marked distinction between authenticity and immaturity.  I have cringed countless times scrolling down my facebook newsfeed as I have seen private conflicts in marriages, families, friendships, churches, and companies made public and open for commentary.  I feel sad and discouraged as I read sharply opinionated statuses or blog entries that seem to drip with bitterness, ugliness, and anger, or seem directed at a person to tear them down.  I know how many times the Bible warns us about our words, and I try my best to use mine carefully.  I don't do it perfectly, but as I journal through this life, I aim to do so with discretion and respect, keeping some issues and lots of details sacred between God, my husband, my family, and me.  I want to be able to share struggles as they are part of our life and journey here on earth, but I never want to hurt anyone in the process.  So some parts of our life go into this particular journal, and others stay tucked away.  And I write about a lot of happy moments because honestly and simply put, we are a happy family!  This blog is filled with pieces of my heart and the life we share and love.

And one day when my kids are older, they will have detailed access to my heart and love for them during their childhood years.  They will know what joy I took in being their mom.  They will know I loved God's Word and delighted in keeping our home when they were little.  This blog will bring back memories and be part of their heritage.  I love that.

As I wrap up this post, I just wanted to say thank you.  Thank you for reading! Thank you for your feedback.  Thank you for sharing a cup of coffee and your journey with me.  Thank you for being patient with me when life's responsibilities keep me from having the time to post as often as I'd like, or bearing with me when I pull back, don't write as often, and try to retreat into that self-protrective corner.  If you have questions or topics I could write about that would help you along the way, please let me know.  Please know that when I sit down in my green chair to share my heart and life, I do so with intentions to encourage you, be a bright light in your life, inspire and energize you.

And most of all, please know that the greatest reason I write is so you can see Jesus.  So you can see His love and invite Him into your life, and let Him transform it into something abundant and joyful.  So you can develop a passion for His Word and let it seep into your daily activities, making them more intentional and positive.  And that through Jesus, even in the midst of this crazy world, you can find contentment.

With Much Love and Many Thanks,

Jennifer
