We Spent Good Friday In A Garden

After an unseasonably chilly week for a Florida spring break, the sun shone brightly and gave warmth to Good Friday, so we drove out to the glorious Bok Tower Gardens for the first time.  Our little family immensely enjoyed the fresh air, bright sunshine, and stunning views.

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known.

In The Garden, Hymn from 1912

It's quite a walk up the path to the top, but an invigorating one.  We stopped and looked and explored and suddenly there it was in all its glory, this cathedral like tower to the sky in the midst of nature's splendor.

We made it just in time for the carillon to ring out its three o'clock concert, and played a fun game of frisbee as the bells serenaded us.

It was an exquisite afternoon.  On the way out Madi commented that Jesus gave us a beautiful day on His special day.  I had to agree, and in my heart marveled once again that the special day she spoke of was the day Jesus gave His life for us, took the sins of the world upon Him.  The day love made the ultimate sacrifice.  It was in a garden that Jesus asked God to take the cup of suffering from Him, yet surrendered to the will of His Father.  And it was in a garden that He was betrayed and arrested, taken away to the cross where He took my place and yours.

So I suppose it was fitting that we spent Good Friday in a garden.  Though we spent it in freedom, in laughter, in celebration.  Because we know the rest of the story.  Death was defeated by love, sin was conquered, the stone rolled away.  Jesus Christ is alive and He has set us free!

Happy Easter!  I pray that you too have in surrender been set free.

Lovingly, Jennifer

Beauty Was Just Around the Corner

Recently, I ended my 90 day journey with David and started another 90 day journey, this one with John, the beloved disciple.  I was sad to wrap up the final lessons on David.  Yes, he was flawed.  Yes, his life held great successes but also devastating failures, as well as mistreatment from people who should have known better. However, through it all his soul was knit to God's.  He was a worshiper.  I am a worshiper.  And I was moved to read of David worshiping, even in his final days when it had all been said and done.

I am now 16 lessons into my 90 day journey with John (written by Beth Moore), and there is already so much I could tell you.  Oh, how I sometimes wish you could all pile in my living room and we could drink coffee, eat scones, and share what we have been learning from God's Word with no time limit or duties awaiting us!  For now, I'll choose to share one thing that spoke to me the other day.

The text was Luke 22:7-13.  The assignment was a Passover meal, and Jesus chose Peter and John to prepare it.  If you know anything about a Jewish Passover meal of this time, it would involve having to slaughter a spotless sacrificial lamb.  Later on, both Peter and John would refer to Christ as the Lamb. Perhaps their preparations of this last supper together would make Christ's fulfillment as our perfect sacrifice even more poignant.  John refers over 20 times to the Lamb in the Book of Revelation.  Peter wrote in I Peter 1:18-19,

For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things, like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.

Beth pointed out that God can do anything he wants.  He could have prepared the supper himself.  Rather, "He sovereignly chooses to employ mortals to flesh out an invisible work in the visible realm."

God uses people.

She went on to say, "If He gives us a task or assigns us to a difficult season, every ounce of our experience is meant for our instruction and completion if only we'll let Him finish the work."

How true.  Philippians 1:6 immediately came to mind.

Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

She wrote of how as Peter and John prepared that Passover meal, they were privy to secrets that would become clearer to them as time passed.  God often works that way.  He doesn't always reveal everything to us immediately.  His work in us is often gradual.

The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them.  (Psalm 25:14)

One of my favorite moments of insight was this.  Beth wrote,

"Ecclesiastes 3:11 says that God makes everything beautiful in its time.  I truly believe that if we're willing to see, God uses every difficulty and every assignment to confide deep things to us, and that the lessons are not complete until their beauty has been revealed.  I fear, however, that we have such an attention deficit that we settle for bearable when beauty was just around the corner."

I was caught by that.  We settle for bearable when beauty was just around the corner.

We allow fear, hurt, anger, bitterness, distractions, discouragement, exhaustion, and a myriad of other possibilities to let us miss the beauty.  If we would have just held on a little longer, let God complete His work, we would have seen it.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to miss the beauty.  Especially when it could be right around the corner.

Don't give up.  Hold on.  Let Him complete His work.  Then enjoy the view.

Welcoming November In Harvest Style

November makes me think of nature's bounty and autumn harvest.

I used shelled nuts from last winter that were hovering around their expiration date to surround a candle in a hurricane jar.  I dressed the hurricane with some nature inspired decorations that I borrowed from my mom's seasonal decoration closet.

I placed it all on a lovely charger I was surprised to come across while running errands at Walmart.  This plate was less than $3 and so warm and pretty.

Signs of nature make me think of God's provision for us, and stir within me a gratefulness for these blessings.

While running errands at Target, I came across this autumn candle, also under $3, on the clearance rack. I love words, and knew it would be a perfect touch to my harvest home.

I nestled that candle within some more of those shelled nuts in another hurricane, this time on a table with reminders of the first Thanksgiving Day.

The large cinnamon sticks make me think of all the spicy goodies that we gather around and enjoy this time of year.  The sap bucket was used in my wedding over 10 years ago, and I dressed it with three bunches of leaves found for 97 cents each, also at Walmart.

The large pilgrims were a gift from my mom; I found the brother/sister pilgrims at Hobby Lobby for 50% off...they were so sweet and reminded me of Madi and Trev.

I love pondering what it must have been like at that first Thanksgiving feast, and often wonder what life was like for those who endured hardship and the unknown to settle in this great land.

I absolutely love this time of year.  As the morning sun cast shadows around my simple signs of harvest, I felt cozy, grateful, and at home.

This season, surround yourself with beauty that will make your heart swell and sing,

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
His love endures forever.

Psalm 107:1

As My Camera Clicked

Just as nature shows to us Your blessing, soon I find my heart confessing...my love is not my own, it all belongs to You.

I've had the song My Father's Heart on my mind lately.  I hadn't thought of it in some time, but I sang it at our wedding and as we celebrated 10 years of marriage this summer it came back to my remembrance.  I love that lyric of how nature reveals God's blessing, and that causes confessions of our heart to God that everything belongs to Him.  Poignant.

It's actually pretty astounding how much of Scripture points to the beauty and majesty of nature as revelation of God's beauty and majesty.  This week the devotional Jesus Calling took me to Isaiah 6:3, where Isaiah saw the Lord on the throne and the angels were crying,

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory!

I have made a few day trips to the beach lately, and that day I journaled,

When I'm at the beach I am in total awe of this.

Since I got my first Le Clic camera in elementary school, I have always been the girl taking pictures.  I am by no means a photographer - I simply love to capture moments and snapshots of life and beauty.  This summer as I have stood on the beach capturing its natural splendor, so many times Scripture has come to my mind as my camera clicked.  I have been overwhelmed and in awe of how the earth is filled with His glory.

Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are?

Psalm 8:6-9 You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, all the sheep and oxen- Even the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea that pass through the paths of the seas.  O Lord our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8:3-4 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him And the son of man that You visit him?

Psalm 19:1 1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Psalm 33:7-9 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap, He lays up the deep in storehouses.  Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.  For He spoke and it was done; He commanded and it stood fast.

Psalm 93:3-4 The seas have lifted up, O LORD, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea—the LORD on high is mighty.

Psalm 24:1-2 The earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.  For HE has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters.

The whole earth is filled with his glory. I love capturing glimpses of that glory behind my lens at the beach, and standing in awe of Him.
